- The list is derived from 200 questions concerning things such as female representation in the corner offices, to blacks and Latinos getting promotions into management
Dive Insight:
Last year, Delhaize America was the only U.S. grocery store to receive a perfect LGBT Corporate Equality Index score from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation — an achievement that earned the company a “Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality” distinction.
The retailer has demonstrated efforts to strive for a diverse and inclusive workplace in other areas too, including those dealing with age, abilities, race and ethnicity. According to a company release, more than 1,000 associates have attended “Unconscious Bias” learning sessions designed to help employees recognize and overcome behaviors and assumptions that may inadvertently lead to biased actions.
Later this year, Delhaize America will also begin offering mandatory online training for all new employees on “Valuing Diversity."
Ahold Delhaize was the only grocer included on DiversityInc.'s list, and even with all of its corporate initiatives, the retailer didn't make the top 50. This raises questions about the grocery industry and the level of investment retailers place in diversity initiatives. While some companies may view these programs as an extra expense, retailers should be making diversity a brand priority.
Today's consumers no longer assess a brand simply by its store format, products and advertisements. They're interested in brands that reflect their values and are intentional about bettering their practices. Being recognized for workplace diversity could give grocers an edge over competitors. In an increasingly competitive grocery space, this advantage could be highly valuable.
