Dive Brief:
- General Mills is planning a $250 million investment into a plant in Murfreesboro, TN.
- The site, currently producing Yoplait and Toaster Strudel, will add two product lines and increase capacity.
- With those additions, 117 jobs should be created. There are about 900 people working at the plant now.
Dive Insight:
This facility expansion is another piece of General Mills' Project Century, the companywide restructuring plan the company began in September. The goal of the restructuring plan is to "streamline the supply chain and identify potential capacity reductions," Daily News Journal reported. While in this case, General Mills is expanding the Murfreesboro plant, this plan has led to several facility closures, including one in Massachusetts and another in California.
In January, General Mills also closed a plant in Midland, Ontario, and one in New Albany, IN. The latter received attention as General Mills worked with the plant workers' union to mitigate the loss of 400 jobs in the community.
