Dive Brief:
- A Tennessee Frito-Lay plant did not meet FDA regulations, so much so that it gave the factory an official warning.
- May and June inspections showed roof leaks, peeling paint, broken pipes, and ingredients like cookie dough leaking from machines.
- "While our assessment differs from some of the agency’s characterizations, we have provided background information and explanations to add clarity to their evaluation," according to Chris Kuechenmeister, a Frito-Lay spokesman. "We have worked quickly to address the report’s observations."
Dive Insight:
The FDA didn't recommend stopping production, and concerns were quickly addressed. Considering the strong emphasis on safety for the industry, particularly lately, it wouldn't be a surprise to see more deep investigations of plants.
"Frito-Lay has a long track record of leadership in food manufacturing and safety and has never received a warning of this kind," according to Kuechenmeister. "We look forward to resolving this matter quickly."
One company that's faced strict scrutiny is Blue Bell, whose ice cream is making its way back to freezers at the end of the month following an entire product recall.
