Dive Brief:
- Coca-Cola is apparently developing new beverage package made from citrus juices, fibers, and and peels.
- The beverage company, which buys — and presumably discards — countless tons of citrus while making juices for brands such as Minute Maid, Simply Orange, and Odwalla, would benefit tremendously if it could convert the undrinkable pieces of the fruit into packaging.
- Coca-Cola filed a trademark Sept. 16 saying it would call such packaging "Peelpack." The company declined to give further details to the Atlanta Business Journal, which broke the story.
Dive Insight:
Coca-Cola, maker of the PlantBottle, clearly likes the idea of bio-based packaging. And any move that finds a way to generate savings from food waste is likely to win the support of investors. Besides, if Peelpack turns out not to work, perhaps Coke can sell the peels to make car parts.
