- Archer Daniels Midland announced its online Sustainability Progress Tracker tool on Earth Day, which features the company’s goals, plans, and reports as to its progress in realizing its Commitment to No-Deforestation initiative.
- Although ADM is not a grower of crops, as a major purchaser, the company wants to create sustainable, traceable ag supply chains that protect high carbon stock forests, natural ecosystems and peatlands, and the rights of the workers in the supply chain.
- By teaming with The Forest Trust, ADM has mapped its palm oil footprint and completed reviews of its suppliers, among other steps. In regard to soy, the company is underway with identifying regions of high risk, establishing baseline scores and reviewing suppliers.

When ingredient companies share their progress in meeting sustainability initiatives they not only benefit consumers who want to support companies that are environmentally and socially-conscious, but also motivate their peers to step up their initiatives and share their progress and results online.
Tyson Foods posted its most recent sustainability report last week, which is part of a social compliance program, and a new workplace safety initiative. Previously released segments on the company’s effort detail animal well-being, corporate social responsibility, environment, and marketplace.
Sustainability efforts can include energy efficiencies in the transportation supply chain and with equipment; eco-friendly packaging; water management; and responsible sourcing.
In other activity, Nestle has partnered with World Animal Protection (WAP) to provide insights on animal protection as part of the company’s Responsible Sourcing Strategy. In December, Nestle announced it would source all of its eggs used in its U.S. products from cage-free hens by 2020.
